Snow and ice cover the mountain peaks,
all paths to the valley blocked to man.
Day after day I sit facing the clay wall,
listen to snowflakes brush my window.

千峰 凍雪合し
万径 人跡絶ゆ。
每日 只 面壁のみ
時に聞く 窻に灑ぐ雪。

Ryokan
The past I know is gone;
the present never lasts.
Time glides by without a trace.
Who can be wise in this constant flux?
I take each day as its own
sustaining myself until I’m released.
After so much wandering, I have arrived here—
twenty years seen through a cloud.
古を問えば古已に過ぐ
今を思えば今も亦然り。
展転して 蹤跡なし
誰か愚 又 誰か賢なる。
縁に隨って時月を消し
己れを保っ て終焉を待つ。
飄として 我れ此地に来り
首を回らせば二十年。
